Button Blanket Assembly
Simonds and U-Connect began a button blanket initiative to create a button blanket to represent our school.   Two and half years ago, Simonds Elementary and U-Connect were brought together on this site. As two distinct programs, it wasn’t an amalgamation as has happened in other schools.  We remain 2 programs, but we function together – like a blended family.  We chose to do this initiative with both schools combined to build on the sense of community within the building. This blanket represents beautifully our Simonds and U-Connect family.   In the middle of the design is the tree of life, with the trunk being two people.  This is to symbolize the two schools as one community. At the top of the tree and the bottom of the tree there are hearts.  These symbolize the students, both current and ones that move on to other schools.  There is a circle surrounding the tree of life this symbolizes that everything is connected and that our histories and stories will be told by past, current and future members of the community to keep the histories and stories continuing.  The hands surrounding the circle represent hands back hands forward and acknowledges our school’s commitment to reconciliation.

It was awesome to watch all our teachers and students sewing on buttons to this collective work of art.  We have two distinct personalities but we are united.  Untied by the space and shared resources, united by our shared staff, united by kindness and united by our school goals and District Vision – and now untied by our story represented in the design of this beautiful button blanket.  Thank you to our Aboriginal Support Worker, Ms. Aimee Brooks, for working so hard on this initiative.  A big thank you to Una-Ann Moyer for the design that so aptly represents who we are.

ADST in K/1
We are continuing to work with puppets this term and have re-enacted many stories using puppets and props. Some of the stories we have read and acted out are The Three Little Pigs, The Hat and The Mitten. Retelling stories in different ways allows students the opportunity to practice their oral language skills and structure of a story (English Language Arts), experimenting with their voices, character and plot (Drama), as well as ordinal numbers: first, second, third etc. (Math). The students have also used puppets to explore math concepts using songs and making stories. One example is “5 Little Animals Jumping on the Bed” where students discovered the concept of subtraction by taking away one each time. We incorporated ADST by designing and making puppets.
